Mathematics Strategies

Word Problems

In Room 7, I am teaching the children to use the CUBES Strategy to solve word problems. At home, I would like you to remind your child to use the CUBES Strategy when completing word problems.

The steps are:

Fact Families

The children are currently revising fact families. I would like you to please provide opportunities for your child to complete fact families at home.

What is a fact family?

A fact family is a group of math facts using the same numbers.  In the case of addition/subtraction, you use three numbers and get four facts.  For example, you can form a fact family using the three numbers 11, 5 and 6:

5 + 6 = 11
6 + 5 = 11
11 − 6 = 5
11 − 5 = 6

Where do we use fact families?

We can use fact families to reinforce or learn the connection between addition and subtraction, and to help children memorize the basic addition & subtraction facts

Example

Ordinal Numbers and Positions

The children are focusing on naming positions using 1st to 10th and position words. I would like you to provide opportunities for your child to order items at home using this language.

Comparing and Measuring Mass

The children are learning how to compare and measure mass.

At home, I would like you to provide opportunities for your child to weigh items. Please encourage your child to use words such as lightest, lighter than, heaviest and heavier than in their conversations.

Number Formation

In Room 7, the Pre Primary and Year One children have been learning to:

Write their numbers from 0 to 100 with the correct formation.

Here are our number formation songs:

0: Make a big loop, just like so. This is the way to make zero.
1: A straight line one it is fun.
2: Around and back on the railway track makes two, two, two.
3: Around the tree and around the tree. This is the way you make a three.
4: Down and across and down some more. This is the way you make a four.
5: With a straight neck and a round tummy, put his hat on, five sure looks funny!
6: Down to a loop, the six rolls a hoop.
7: Across the sky and straight down. This is the way you make a seven.
8: Make an “S” and do not wait. Climb back up to make an eight.
9: A loop and a line makes a nine.

Kind regards

Miss Ryan
