What are we learning in Mathematics?

Term One Mathematics Skills

Number and Algebra

Counting

In Room Seven, the students have been learning how to orally count from 0 by 2s, 5s and 10s to 100. To support the students, I have been incorporating some entertaining songs into our daily Mathematics Warm Ups.

The songs are:

At home, I encourage you to provide opportunities for your child to orally count from 0 by 2s, 5s and 10s to 100.

Word Problems

Thank you very much for your support with Word Problem Wednesday. It is great to see all the students having a go at the completing the word problems.

Last week, I introduced the CUBES Strategy to the students. The students use this strategy to solve addition and subtraction word problems.

The steps are:

At home, I will like you to remind your child to use the CUBES Strategy when completing word problems.

Number Bonds

In Mathematics, the students have started to add using number bonds.

I have provided two examples for you.

The examples identify the part-part-whole in an addition equation.

The examples show you the part-part-whole in a number bond.

Example One

 Example Two

Measurement and Geometry

Over the last few weeks, the students have been learning to:

Name and order the days of the week.
Name and order the months of the year.
Name the seasons.

Here are some focus questions to ask your child at home.

Days of the week
Months of the year
Seasons
How many days are there in a week?

How many months are there in a year?

How many seasons in a year?

How many days in a fortnight?

How many days in a month?

What are the seasons in order?

How many hours in a day?

What are the months in order?

What are the days in order?

Please note:

To assist the students in ordering the months of the year, I have been using an excellent song called ‘Months of the Year’.

If you have any questions or will like to chat, please come and see me 😊 😊 😊

Kind regards

Miss Ryan
